Indij Design Role: Indigenous Community Engagement and

Design Guidance to CRC Landscape Architecture Team

Client: Cairns Regional Counci (CRC)

The consultation methodology was inclusive of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji, Yirrganydji and broader indigenous community of Cairns. Shields Street Heart redevelopment showcases the rich indigenous culture belonging to this region.

Shields Street Heart embeds indigenous themes reflecting the unique rainforest and waterways the region is renowned for throughout the world.

As part of the Engagement Submission to the client, Indij Design incorporated Traditional Owner sitting fees in recognition for their knowledge and time. This was to place value on their contributions like those of a historian or other project consultant.

Indij Design advocated for opportunities for indigenous artists to be involved in the artscape by a considered approach to procurement methods for artworks. Six of our seven recommendations were accepted.

We worked along side Cairns Regional Council Landscape Architect time to look at ways we could translate the outcomes taken from the engagement and apply them to the urban design.

Since the early days of consultation and conceptual design, many joined the project grabbing a hold of the concepts introduced by the design team to bring this project to reality. Emerging and established artists works form part of Shields Street Artscape. The images capture the end result.
